| Coins Magazine
Coins Magazine, a magazine by F and W publications, of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a magazine about the hobby of numismatics, better known as coin collecting. Click the spoiler to find out about it !
- Spoiler:
The magazine is distributed monthly to subscribers and on newsstands. When first opening an issue, the first column I go to is Coin Finds. This article contains letters from readers of the magazine detailing what coins they have found. There are usually 2-4 letters in the article, and most of them are very interesting. I have had one letter published in this section. The second column I turn to is written by Dr. Robert "Bart" Bartanowicz. This column is a description of one of the author's stories involving a coin or coins. It usually includes some humor, and is very well written. It is my second favorite column in Coins. The main focus of each issue is 2-4 articles focusing on different coins. The most previous issue, which I recieved today, has feature articles on Modern commemorative coin bargains, questionable commemorative themes, and popular coins with an Indian Head design. While I am not interested in any of these subjects, these articles are always well-written and informative if I decided to get into these types of coins. There are approximately 6 other columns wirrten in the magazine. The first one is a letter from the editor, Robert Van Ryzin. The second column is written by Alan Herbert, one of two he writes in the magazine. His first column focuses on answering questions about coins submitted by readers. His answers are short, however, they are extremely through. The next column I see is "Paper Profiles" written by Fred Reed. As you may be able to tell, this is not about coins, but rather paper money. I am semi-interested about paper money, and his columns are very informative and usually give an experience or lesson he has learned. The second column written by Alan Herbert is entitled "Numismatic Mysteries". It details some wonders coin collectors may have about their coins or just general questiona about the hobby. In this issue, he details questions about coins with dates that are not in line with when these coins were made. A very interesting colun indeed. The second to last column I see is written by Tom LaMarre, and is entitled "Budget Buyer". This column is very handy for those who want to find bargain coins, and because the coin market changes every month, makes for a very informative column, and one that I would reccommend be read shortly after receiving the magazine. The last column written is in a bad position in the magazine. It is entitled "Basics and Beyond", written by Mike Thorne. He details coin collecting basics, such as cleaning coins and cataloging purchases of coins. This column is in the back of the magazine, but should be int he front, because for any new collector, this is a very good column that should be read first. So, it should be near the front of the magazine. In the back of the magazine is a price guide for United States Coins and Paper Money. It keeps collectors like myself up to date with prices of coins. A very handy section indeed. There are many ads by many companies in the magazine, making it a good place if you want to sell coins. Overall, this is a good magazine for new and veteran coin collectors alike. The only problem is the placement of "Basics and Beyond", an issue that could be easily resolved. Overall, 4.5/5 seems appropriate.
